Derinkuyu is the most impressive of Cappadocia's ancient underground cities — a vast subterranean complex carved from soft volcanic rock that once sheltered thousands of people from Byzantine to early Christian times. Descending 8 floors (approximately 85 metres below ground), the complex contains sleeping quarters, wine cellars, oil presses, stables, chapels, ventilation shafts and even a school. At its peak, Derinkuyu could accommodate up to 20,000 people and their livestock. The experience of walking through these ancient corridors is utterly unique.
Year-round — the underground city maintains a cool constant temperature of around 13°C, making it a welcome refuge in summer heat. Avoid peak midday in July/August as corridors get crowded.
Derinkuyu is 30km south of Nevşehir. Direct dolmuş buses run from Nevşehir and Göreme. Most Cappadocia Green Tour operators include Derinkuyu. Taxis from Göreme take about 35 minutes.
