Ihlara Valley is one of Turkey's greatest natural and historical treasures — a dramatic 14km gorge carved by the Melendiz River through ancient volcanic rock, its steep cliff walls pierced by over 100 cave churches adorned with Byzantine frescoes. The valley floor is lush and green, following the winding river through a landscape of towering cliffs, poplars and wildflowers. The hike between Ihlara village and Selime (or the shorter riverside section to Belisırma) is one of the most rewarding walks in all of Turkey.
April–June is ideal — the valley is in full bloom and hiking conditions are perfect. Autumn (September–October) is also excellent. Avoid summer midday heat for the full hike.
Ihlara Valley is 40km south of Nevşehir and 115km from Kayseri. Most visitors join a guided Green Tour from Göreme. Independent travellers can take a bus to Aksaray and then a dolmuş to Ihlara village.
The full 14km hike is manageable for most fitness levels — allow 4–5 hours
Belisırma village offers the best lunch stops (riverside trout restaurants)
Bring sturdy footwear — the valley path is uneven in places
The cave churches are open; bring a small torch to see the frescoes clearly
