Mustafapaşa (formerly Sinasos) is perhaps Cappadocia's most overlooked gem — a perfectly preserved village of extraordinary 19th-century Greek and Ottoman stone mansions, many still bearing their original carved facades, arched doorways and painted ceilings. The village was home to a prosperous Greek Christian community until the 1923 population exchange, and their architectural legacy is remarkable. Today, a handful of boutique guesthouses occupy restored mansions, and the village receives far fewer visitors than Göreme or Ürgüp, giving it an atmosphere of genuine tranquillity.
Year-round. The village is never crowded, making any season pleasant. Autumn light makes the stone particularly beautiful. Spring wildflowers add colour to the surroundings.
Mustafapaşa is 6km south of Ürgüp. Dolmuş runs infrequently — a taxi from Ürgüp takes 10 minutes and is very affordable. A hire car gives the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding area.
Walk the entire village — it takes less than 2 hours and every turn reveals something beautiful
Taktali Monastery is a short and easy hike with excellent valley views
The village is best combined with Soğanlı Valley and Mustafapaşa on the same day
Ask your guesthouse owner about local history — the stories are fascinating
