Ortahisar is one of Cappadocia's least touristy villages — a refreshingly authentic place where locals still use the ancient rock houses for storing citrus fruits, a centuries-old tradition. The village is dominated by its dramatic 86-metre-high rock citadel, which offers outstanding views over the surrounding valleys. The streets are quiet and winding, lined with carved stone houses, and the pace of life is wonderfully slow. It's an ideal base for hikers heading into Uzundere or Hallaçdere valleys.
April–June and September–November. The village is beautiful in winter after snowfall. Summer is warm but not as hot as the more exposed areas of Cappadocia.
Ortahisar is 5km from Ürgüp and 8km from Göreme. It's easily reached by car or taxi. There is limited dolmuş service — a taxi from Ürgüp costs very little.
Visit on a weekday for the most authentic experience — weekends bring more day-trippers
The citadel is best climbed in morning light (eastern views)
Ask locals about the citrus storage tradition — it's fascinating
Combine with a hike to Pancarlık Valley for a full day out
